School Room Makeover

It's funny all the things you learn your first time through something...like homeschooling. I balked a lot of "school decor" last year, but realized my kids LOVE it. I didn't want to cut down the legs on my wooden table last year, but realized the kids will sit longer at a table their size. I wasn't consistent with our "calendar time" and realized I need to be, there are concepts the kids will master easily in just 5 minutes a day!

So, I've spent the past few weeks planning, shopping, & working in the room. I finally finished it today. I had to get these posted so you could see it...

Our school area:

I added the black bookshelf under the bulletin board )it was re-purposed from D's bedroom). It now holds all our learning games, math manipulatives, globe & CD player. The white shelves remain anchored to the wall (where they were last year) holding lots of books (including curriculum books), science, art supplies and other misc. school supplies. The alphabet (hard to see) along top of ceiling fits perfectly from the steps wall to the white shelf (gotta love Dollar Tree bargains)!

The kid's computer was moved to the end of the white shelves. By moving it further down in the room, I'm hoping to prevent those unwanted distractions when I've got one at the table and one on the computer. :o)

The wall the computer used to be up against is now free to hold my gutter bookshelves (more on those below) and a few posters (the "Learning is Fun" poster is from the Dollar tree)...

Kid-sized tables!!!!

They are adjustable to 3 heights to grow with the kids. They also collapse easily so on the weekends the room will be open for play! (I love Sam's Club!)

These bookshelves are the best! I had seen the idea online in a few mom blogs who had put them in their kid's bedrooms and/or school areas. This tutorial was helpful. For our shelves shown below, I went to our local construction store & bought:
  • 1 10 foot vinyl gutter (I cut it in half using chunky scissors out of my hubby's toolbox).
  • 2 sets of end pieces (be sure to get right/left for each set).
  • 4 brackets (2 for each shelf - funny how theses were more $$$ than the gutter!)
It took 5 minutes to assemble & put up using anchors & screws we had already.

I love the idea that the books face out...they just beg to be read, don't they?!

So in my quest to have a "calendar time" each day, I created this board with ideas that I had seen from a few websites (here & here).

I drew the calendar grid (my hubby thought I bought it!) with a good 'ole sharpie & yardstick. The calendar numbers (and holiday cards - not pictured) I bought from a local teacher store. The month/year cards are just laminated cardstock so the kids will be able to write the months/year each month. And all the velcro I used for the board I bought a thrift shop for $1.20!!!!

The two date papers on the right I found from websites for the kid's to practice writing the date various ways and seeing the days of school in the correct place value.

The back of the board...

Kids can practice making the date with change (plastic money - from local craft store on velcro strips). The hundred's chart we'll use to practice skip-counting each day - beginning with 2's and working our way up for D this year.

The weather card (top right) is also various types of weather with velcro on the back...extra cards aren't shown.

The temperature shows inside/outside and the kids will be able to mark this easily as we have an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer in our home.

Along the bottom are library pockets (Dollar Store find) that are laminated and velcro-ed to the board. We can remove them to practice days of the week order and the cards in the pockets can be removed each day to show "yesterday," "today" and "tomorrow."

The blank space will be filled with a plastic pocket to hold extra supplies.

Personalized Turn-About - D had one last year (garage sale find 2 years ago for $1) and I found K's at another garage sale this summer for $1! They were able to personalize them and fill them with their school supplies this week. K immediately wanted to "do school" with me!

One more week and we'll begin our 2nd year of homeschooling!
