Lesson 100 Complete!

The big news today... D COMPLETED LESSON 100 in his Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Lessons book! He was so excited and so was I!

I made him pose with his book and his "thumbs up" sign!
As soon as he finished the lesson I told him that beginning on Monday he can begin reading the easy reader books I checked out of the library (along with a few we already have at home). He said, "Where are they?" So I gave him the first one and he read it without any help from me (Eric Carle's Have you seen my cat?)...
Then he said, "Okay, where's the next one!" And read it (We Hide, You Seek)! I love it! He'll be reading Hop on Pop next week and we may do a book a day or over several days...just depends on the book. Two of the last books suggested out of the list of 20 in the back of 100 Easy Lessons is Nate the Great and the first Magic Tree House book. Fun!

His Bible story the past few days has been about the Israelites leaving Egypt and God leading them by a pillar of clouds by day and a pillar of fire by night. For science on Thursday, he put a cotton ball in water and then watched it "rain" as the water dripped out. Just like clouds release water when it rains. (He picked the Minnie Mouse bowl to use since it was the closest to the school area...funny!)

Today for his art activity, he made a quail (a.k.a. paper airplane) that actually did fly fairly well. He had learned in his Bible story that God provided food (quail & manna) for the Israelites. When asked what food he could thank God for he replied, "fruits, vegetables, soup, pasta..." I wish he would eat more of these foods!

K joined in on making her own quail, too!
K was ready for her school day dressed as a princess today - complete with dress-up shoes that you can't see in the picture. She wore the dress ALL morning and through lunch today.
K's story was about Joseph being thrown into the pit and having his brothers selling him (her stories are now slowing down compared to D's stories which is good for her comprehension). For her "5" page in her counting book she cut out 5 purses (since Joseph's brothers sold him for money and you keep money in your purse). :o)

She did a great job cutting the circles around the purses all by herself today. She was even using just one hand to open her scissors (in past week's she's used both hands to open them).

Gluing the purses on the paper...I love watching her work independently!
The completed "5" page with 5 purses (which she also counted)...

For unit 5 she's just reviewing the 4 letters she's learned, so for her "Hide'n'Seek" page she had to match the uppercase to the lowercase letters and find all four in the beginning of her rhyme at the top of the page. She can spot them quickly! And this afternoon when we were reading for about an hour on the couch, she kept pointing to letters and telling me what they were (she was right).

One of her other activities today was coloring over various coins...we learned the names of the coins...why can't our mint make each one a different color?! Seriously! They're so confusing for kids...except for the pennies (which are currently K's favorite to count).
Another week over, already?! Time is flying!
