We've done a few projects on paper, read a few books, watched several YouTube videos & played a few fire safety games on the internet the past two days. D&K are enjoying it and we still have two days of learning left in our week!
I thought I'd post highlights so far this week...
We read the book from the library called No Dragons for Tea. It was a cute, non-scary story about what to do if your house catches fire (the dragon sneezed over tea and ignited the tablecloth & curtains). The kids laughed through the book, but also reviewed & learned some safety tips.
D did a great job alphabetizing fire/fireman words...He wanted to know why he has to learn to put things in ABC order. I gave him several examples to prove he would use this skill in the future. :o) I printed the title & list of words from Publisher after copying a similar paper that required the kids to write all the words (I knew D would balk at that).
D&K played a lot on the USFA Kid's website today where there are various fire safety games. D also read a TON of safety tips on his own working through the various parts of the website. Funny how he will complain when he has to read a random book, but will read anything & everything when he wants to learn something.
D did all the reading and even completed the Jr. Fire Marshall Quiz that he Aced and received this printable certificate we printed off (can you tell our color cartridge is shot? Pink was not the color of the certificate online...it was yellow). Thankfully D was okay with it and filled out his name and the "date code" on it.
Both kids watched a YouTube video today about fire saftey. K begged to watch it a second time again so I let her. It was good for her to see the firefighter in his gear as she's been frightened when seeing them in the past at the fire house. D is begging to get a chance to practice climbing out his window...I assured him we will do it when Daddy is home to help. :o)
D's "Fire Plan" for our house. He's in the blue crayon in his room and J and I are the purple heads on the far right. He made two ways out for all of us...blue line (1st way through the doors) and the dotted lines in purple (2nd way out through the windows). This was after we looked at the book Todd's Fire Drill. He even drew a map "key" on the far left. Our "safe meeting place" is a neighbor's front yard tree.
And for dinner we made chili in the crockpot. It's a standard fireman dinner, right? D&K were disgusted with the raw ground turkey, but watched it turn light brown in the skillet. They correctly identified the onion & green pepper. ;o) K washed all the can tops, D opened all the cans and then we all took turns mixing everything it in the crockpot. They learned to loosely follow a recipe...D learned that T means Tablespoon. :o) It was a good "health/home ec" lesson for today.
We have more books to read, 9-volt batteries to buy to replace the current smoke alarm batteries, practice a fire drill and a few other activities to finish out our week. I asked Drew if he liked learning like this and he said, "Oh, yes, it's so much better than just sitting & copywork." :o) Yeah for creativity! I'm taking it week-by-week right now.
