blocks, rocks & cubes

We began Unit 25 today.  K is reviewing all her letters (A-T) this week so we went through all the flashcards today and she remembered almost all the letters/sounds!  :o)  Her Bible Stories this week are all about the parables of Jesus.  The one we read to today from Matthew 7 was about the wise man & foolish man.  It's about those who hear God's word and either listen to them or choose not to listen to them.  It was fun to talk with K about it and at the same time speak to my heart, too!

We sang the "Wise Man/Foolish Man" song - of course!  ;o)  Then K got to work building two houses - one on the rock (table) and the other on the sand (blanket).  She saw the one on the sand was very unstable and fell, but the one on the rock stood firm when we shook the table to imitate the wind/rain.

She also drew rocks on a piece of paper (she wanted pink rocks) and then I cut paper strips for her to tape onto the paper to make a house on the rock.  She did a great job - even wanted her name written on the paper. :o)  She also added raindrops using the dot pens (like Bingo daubers) we bought over the weekend.  She loved this!

Drew's learning about George Washington this week and we read the story about George telling the truth after he chopped down the cherry tree he wasn't supposed to chop down when he was a little boy.  (At the beginning of the story there was a disclaimer about whether or not the story really happened...but the lesson was true regardless...always tell the truth!)

We began reading Buster Bear today...what a different character from the others we read about so far this year.  D was excited to begin listening to a new book.

For math, we reviewed more facts with new flashcards I bought over the weekend.  They're really nice - color-coded by fact family (include ALL the facts - the other set I had didn't) and come with 2 large rings to hold them.  D flew through the first two families and so we worked on +2s and +3s today and he was able to show me some of the facts with the new unifix cubes.

The kids loved using the new unifix cubes we bought over the weekend, too.  (Can you tell I had fun shopping at the education store?! :o)   Since we switched to Singapore math, I had been wanting to get some of these for D's math.  The kids LOVED them and D begged to play with them while he listened to Buster Bear and his history story today.  Here are a few of the "creations" that occurred while they listened...
