The Human Body Week 2

This week we completed our unit on the human body. We read a few more books including, The Busy Body Book. We also read information about germs from kid's website and reviewed what we learned last week by watching a few animated YouTube videos about digestion, the nervous system, the respiratory system and more. D also worked on a few projects with his lapbook, including making a timeline of his life so far and measuring the length of some of his body parts (feet, arms, legs). Today. he really enjoyed playing a food pyramid game on this site.

The kids enjoyed making their full-size people on Tuesday...

D made his person complete with PLAID pants!

K made her person with SHORTS!

C woke up from her nap as we were taking pictures so I just had to get one of her...

Here's the cover of D's lapbook - the little D on the left he colored last week and glued it to the cover. The other body systems he drew today...the nervous system (top right) and the muscles & ligaments shown by the gray lines (bottom right). The words at the top read, "My body By: D & Mommy"

The inside of the lapbook:

This was a neat printout from homeschool share that I printed on vellum paper (see- thru) and D loved...He had to glue the words to the correct picture for skin, muscles, bones & organs/nerves. The back page was an outline of a boy with the verse glued underneath...We referred to it often as we studied the complexity of the body God created for us to use while on earth. :o)
A mini-book identifying the ways we take care of our bodies...there were two more on the other side of the paper as it folded up.
The body part riddles D told me were "too easy" for him to complete...
D's timeline - he did this all on his own!
Germs! D learned their "tiny invaders" that "make me sick" which he wrote on the inside of the little flaps. Sorry the pic is so light!
On the back of the lapbook, D glued a color printout of the new food pyramid. He knows the food groups of studies we've done in the past (and how we talk about them a lot when we make meals & eat) so we didn't spend too much time with it. He did enjoy the adventure game today - having to pick good foods for his character to eat so he could have energy to go on his adventure!

This study wasn't exhaustive, but a good overview of what is under our skin & how God designed our bodies to work. We definitely have more things to study in the future...but you know we have to leave something else to study the next 11 years! :o)

D is loving his 2nd grade math (same curriculum - Singapore) and very happy to begin adding 2 and 3 digit numbers together tomorrow. I really like the way this curriculum teaches him to think...he's been adding 2-digit numbers in his head for a few weeks already...thinking nothing of it. Somehow this always "scared" my second graders when I taught school. I'm excited to be getting into something that is a bit more challenging for him. He needs the challenge!

For his writing, he's been copying Psalm 100 - that we've also been working on memorizing for Thanksgiving. Some of you may get a copy of his Psalm 100 soon, so I can't post the pic yet. :o) It's amazing how his attitude about writing has changed, especially when I have a fun, colored writing paper I printed for Thanksgiving. ;o)

Over the next few days we'll be reading about Thanksgiving, doing some crafts & projects & baking related to Thanksgiving and of course, our daily math/reading. Daddy is off tomorrow and all next week, so doing school will be a challenge (he's always a big "distraction" when he's home ;o). I'll post a few pics of activities soon...
