Legos & Pokey Puppy

Here's D's November calendar - he is getting very creative in his coloring skills. :o) He marked Veteran's Day with a flag and Thanksgiving Day with a star. I decided to give the kids their own calendar for this month and see how it goes. Since we've been doing school in the dining room a lot lately, we're not downstairs using our big calendar. By the way, the calendar pages are from here. D&K are writing the date as the month progresses. Next month I will work with K coloring the days in a pattern as the month progresses.

This week D is doing a unit on LEGOS from here. It's a great click-able document he can almost do completely by himself. He worked through Day 1 today learning about Denmark, its flag and the founder of Legos. He also learned Legos were originally made from WOOD.

One of his projects was to build the flag of Denmark from Legos...this is what he came up with. He also had to find Denmark on the map & color it (he chose to color it in yellow - so it's just barely visible). Do you know where Denmark is?! Do you know the capital city? He also watched a brief video about Copenhagen and saw it was very much like our cities. The components of his lapbook he worked on today...the tiny paper is the word "granule" and D found the definition online and wrote it...
The Lego inventor's name...D's building challenge for today...a taxi - very multi-colored! He took the picture himself. Soon I think he'll be blogging for me...ha!
IF $ grew on trees in our yard, I would have pre-ordered all the pieces from the Lego website so each day he'd have NEW Legos & everything for each challenge. Not a big deal..it's fun to hunt for pieces!

K's doing The Pokey Little Puppy activities from here. We read the book today. She loved it. Everyday this week we'll read the story again and do a few activities related to it as she can't tag along too well with what D is doing this week.

She counted all the puppies in the book today - telling me there were 16. She also wrote "16" by herself! I was amazed! (See paper in bottom of pic below.) She is writing all the time - lots of scribbles - great pre-writing skills!
She also counted all the flowers and wrote "31" by herself (see middle paper in pic above), although the "3" is definitely interesting.

She also glued Eph 6:1 inside a puppy matchbook cover that she cut out by herself. She knows this verse by heart already!

We definitely had FUNschool today!
