The story: An elderly woman who is a quiltmaker makes amazingly, beautiful, colorful quilts but doesn't sell them. She gives them to poor and needy people only even though she has many people come to her cottage offering her lots of $ to buy them. The greedy king learns of these quilts and demands that she make one for him. She refuses and says she will only make one for him if he gives away all his things...he has things upon things and wants even more. A good example of GREED! He refuses and throws her in a bear's den...she makes a pillow for the bear with her shawl (after he roars at her and she replies kindly, "You must be grouchy because your only pillow is a rock.") The king comes back and finds her still alive, asks her again to make a quilt and she refuses as he hasn't given anything away. He puts her on a teeny, tiny island (the size of her feet) and leaves her to drown when she falls asleep that night. Sparrows come to rescue her and she makes them all tiny purple coats to wear in a tree. She keeps reminding the king that she will make a quilt for him if he gives his things away...adding one piece for each thing he gives away. Finally the king searches his kingdom/castle for one thing to give away...a tiny marble. He gives it to a little boy whose face lights up immediately. The king realizes it's nice to GIVE, so he continues to give things away. Finally all that is left is his throne which he gives the quiltmaker to sit on as she works on her quilts. She finished his quilt and gives it to him and he realizes he's finally happy.
For our Bible lesson, we talked about greed, kindness, generosity. D looked up Proverbs 15:1 (kindness - the quiltmaker spoke kindly to the bear after he roared at her) and Philippians 4:19 (greed - talking about how God provides for our NEEDS, we don't have to want everything like the king in the story who was never satisfied.) We also talked about how stuff/things doesn't make us happy, only Jesus is TRUE, REAL happiness in our lives!
For science, D read about bears in one of our animal encyclopedia. (This book was one of our best deals/finds at O's a few months ago!) We learned what they eat, how tall they are, what they do during the winter (hibernate).
For language arts, we reviewed the word adjective and went to the page in the book where the author described "things that glittered, shimmered and glowed." We then took turns describing items in our home - green tree, yellow lights, shiny floor, soft couch, etc. - D&K were able to pick out the adjectives!
D also learned the definitions of greedy, stashed, seize and wailed...everything the king portrayed in the book before he learned to be generous & giving.
For geography, D identified the 7 continents on the globe (with a little help) as we talked about the king traveling all over the world to give away his possessions.
K colored the quilt square on the left and D colored the one on the right - printed from a quilter's website.
The kids played "I Spy" with the page in the book that shows one room of the king's things. They loved it but I had to help them, it was tricky!
The list...
K's "squibbles" on a card she made for her cousin...I love this pre-writing skill she's developing!
