Today we read The Legend of the Candy Cane and then D completed a tiny lapbook (half of a file folder folded in half) about it and did a few activities suggested from this website. He enjoyed it!
He learned where Germany is (and the city of Cologne) where the peppermint sticks originated - did you know they were solid white at first without a bend at the top? He also learned where Wooster, Ohio is located (the first person to bring the sticks to America resided in Wooster).
We watched a video about how candy canes are made and then another one about how gum is made after D saw the link on the side of the page. :o) He would have watched about 10 more, but I stopped him and told him we had to keep moving on our activities for today.
He reviewed alliteration and glued an example ("people waited, watched, wondered & wished") inside the mini matchbook to go in the lapbook.
He learned definitions to a few words he didn't know - lumber, misery, tailor, legend, gleaming, and confections.
The book talks about the candy cane (when held upside-down) is a "J" for Jesus! And when held "right side up" is a shepherd's crook. We contrasted shepherds with Jesus - how He is our shepherd and we are His sheep. He cares for us as a shepherd cares for his sheep. D recited Psalm 23 since he had memorized it for Sparks a few weeks ago. And we read in Isaiah 53 "By his stripes we are healed." and so the stripes on the candy cane remind us that Jesus died on the cross for US (red on the candy cane = his blood shed for US), to take away OUR sins and make US clean, pure (white on the candy cane). It was a great reminder every time we see a candy cane this next week!
We also made candy cane snowmen. They're easy, but a little time-consuming. You need only candy canes, felt, ribbon, a Sharpie marker & a hot glue gun. D was a great helper - cutting the fringe on all the scarves & hat pieces and then drawing on the eyes/mouth with a Sharpie marker. He also decided a lot of the color combination choices and told me it was fun designing them. ;o) We made a TON of them as I'm going to hand them out for the SS class we teach on Sunday.
K made a few beaded candy canes for the tree, too.
And we made candy cane hot chocolate (homemade mix - we just used candy canes to stir it) ~ MMMMmmmm!
