beanbag Jonah & tasting foods

We had a fun school morning today completing Day 4 of Unit 19 for both kids.

K's story was still about Jonah - the part where the whale spits him onto the dry land and he finally obeys God and goes to Ninevah.

Her activity to go with this part of the story, she was to be the "whale" and toss "Jonah" (beanbag) onto the "dry land" (white laundry basket).  She loved this, though it shows how much she needs to work on her throwing skills - she truly does "throw like a girl!"  ;o)  She wanted the basket up really close to her so she could make it every time. :o)

She sprinkled glitter on letter "P" and did a nice job with it!  She'd use glitter every school day if I let her!  :o)

She also acted out various motions with her stuffed animal - the animals were obeying just like Jonah did when he went to Ninevah (finally).  In the picture below she's making the animal stand on her head...

D's History lesson today was about Augustine - earlier in his life when he wasn't following God, making poor choices and actually stealing pears from someone's yard only to find out later the pears weren't sweet like he anticipated.

To go along with the history story, I set out 3 sets of foods (salt/sugar, cocoa & cinnamon, apple juice & lemon juice).  We began with salt/sugar.  The kids tried to guess what they were and then tasted them.  They did pretty well but were shocked when the cocoa didn't taste sweet like chocolate (the way it smelled).  :o)

Smelling the juices (apple & lemon)...

We talked about how some foods look really good (cocoa) and even smell good but when you truly taste them they aren't sweet.  D and I compared this to sin - sometimes it looks "fun"/"cool" but once you do it, it's not sweet.  Your left feeling "sour" - sad, disappointed and there are often consequences of sin.

He was challenged a bit for math today - adding 1s and 10s mentally.  The page began easy (5+2) but then D was adding 15+2 and 25+2.  The back side of the page was subtracting - subtracting 1s and 10s.  He was stumped on a few of them but we worked through it and he corrected his mistakes.

D read aloud the second chapter of Owl at Home.  It was all about "strange bumps" in Owl's bed which turned out to be his feet but Owl didn't realize it.  D thought it was silly and did a nice job reading it.  He also learned how -ed says 3 different sounds (ed, t & d).  He didn't complain too much about the Pathways book today. :o)

For handwriting, I had him make up a sentence about his marbles/marble run since he had built a nice track this morning all by himself (see video on other blog soon whenever I figure out YouTube).  His suggestion, "I like marbles."  He's smart - he knew I'd make him only write 1 sentence.  I told him it was a bit short so we re-worded it to read "I like building amazing marble runs in the playroom."  He did a really nice job writing each letter correctly & neatly within the lines - it helps to write about something fun! :o)
