coats, valentines & mighty minds

We had an enjoyable school morning - actually started early for once!  We finished Unit 19 for both kids today...wow - 19 weeks of school completed for this year!  What an accomplishment!  Next Monday we'll celebrate 100 days of school!  Can't wait!

Today K finished up her study of Jonah and the letter "P" and actually did the complete motions for her rhyme (the past four days of the unit she hasn't wanted to do the motions and finally today she did them).  It went like this, "As I say one, Jonah packs & runs..." and it goes on through 10 with rhyming words & the Jonah story all the way through.  She traced letter "P" with her finger again and did a nice job.  We read the little devotional for letter "P - Polite" and talked about politeness and how she can be polite to Daddy, Mommy, D & C.  It was a cute conversation. ;o)

D's history story today was about Augustine - coming to know Jesus and then teaching others about Him.  For D's activity he was to say, "I am sinful" and then put on a large coat (zip it up) and the coat was like asking Jesus to be His Savior and "covering" his sins.  D said, "I know that Mommy!"  I'm so happy he does truly know Jesus as his Savior.  It was good for K to hear and spurred conversation with her about Jesus dying on the cross later today in the van.

Here's a pic of D in one of Daddy's coats...with his sin "covered"...
K in one of Daddy's coat totally balking at me taking her picture...

D had to compete 2-digit addition & subtraction today (dealing with tens & ones again).  He was frustrated I was trying to help him with the little sticks we had bundled last week in groups of 10.  One problem was 35 - 10 = and he totally wanted to do it all in his head...he's so stubborn sometimes!  But he does get the answer right, so I don't force him to use the manipulatives...

After our "official" school time, we stayed at the table to make Valentine cards.  I had picked up a cute set of "make your own" cards at JoAnn's and it was fun for the kids to each create 3 with matching envelopes. I helped K just a bit, but D created all 3 of his on his own.  (Yes, K's outfit of choice is now the purple tutu again. :o)

Then, since C was still napping (she took a really LONG morning nap) we stayed at the table and played "Mighty Mind" & "Super Mind".  K was doing the Mighty set and D was doing Super set.  I highly recommend both sets of these as fun "busy" things to do at the table...it really challenges them!  Each set comes with a certain number of colored shapes (circles, semi-circles, diamonds, squares & triangles), puzzle cards and plastic tray.  The kids have to place the plastic pieces inside the dark outlines a certain way.  The Mighty set begins showing the kids each shape and what shapes can be made putting a few together.  The Super set is just the puzzle cards - built on knowledge of doing the Might set.

D's puzzle card almost solved...

K chose to keep filling in the plastic tray that holds all the pieces rather than solve puzzles on the cards...she had trouble at first, begging me to help her but after 2 times, she was doing it on her own.
