For K's unit this week, her Bible stories are about Jesus' birth. Today we talked specifically about the shepherds coming to visit baby Jesus in the stable. She used FPLP figures (pic above right) to recreate the scene...complete with a white sheep & black sheep. :o) She then used dry spaghetti, cotton balls and paper towel piece to create the stable scene (the sorry looking stick figures were my attempt at quick people).
D's rhyme for Unit 21 is sung to the tune of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" but the words are "Take me out in the ocean..." since he's learning about the explorers and America this week. Today's history story was about Christopher Columbus and how he tried to get to India/China by going West instead of East since he believe the world was round. D loved the story and after lunch today we were able to find an old cartoon about Columbus (1960s) on YouTube that had a lot of the facts that he learned today in his story.
For his activity, we used our small globe and flashlight to talk about the earth rotating & spinning around the sun for each day/year. We had talked about it in the fall and D remembered a lot of it!
For math today, I first tried having D review his facts using the computer program that goes with his Singapore books. He did not want to do it. So I made a simple page with number bonds to help him review his facts. He was not happy about it, but finally sat down to do it and review flashcards. He really wanted to do another workbook page, but I told him we're not moving on until we know the facts. It's so frustrating for him, but I know in the long run, he's has to learn the facts. Thankfully we're in 1st grade math - so even if it takes him MONTHS to get the facts down, he'll be okay since this year the state sees him as a Kindergartner this year.
We found a really fun science webpage this morning after finding a video on YouTube related to Fridgits. The company has lots of other fun science toys & kits including other marble sets made by Quercetti. D was begging me to order the Fridgit set today...I didn't. Maybe it'll be something he works towards memorizing all his facts?!?!
