We began Unit 20 on Tuesday - which was also the day we began getting LOTS more snow! J came home from work around 1 p.m. which is so out of the ordinary and so I didn't get a chance to blog. Yesterday, I woke up not feeling well. J's workplace was closed so he had the day off - also out of the ordinary. I did school with the kids in the morning, but didn't blog in the afternoon because I opted to nap with K. I feel so much better today, thank goodness and have time to blog!
For K, Unit 20 is a review of all letters A-P that she's learned so far this school year. (With her curriculum every 5th unit is review if you haven't figured it out yet. ;o) On Tuesday we spent time going through each flashcard and she remembered almost all the sounds - yeah! Her rhyme this unit incorporates all the sounds which is helpful review each day, too!
She's matching her capital letters to their lowercase letters in this picture...she did it all by herself and matched them all correctly!
On Wednesday her letter activity was to make a letter (her choice) in corneal spread over a sheet of bright paper in a pan. She LOVED this activity and did it most of the time I worked with D (almost an hour!). It reminds me that we need a new rice box in the basement to play with!
To go along with her story about God's hand writing on the wall - she had to make this picture (she didn't want her pic taken which explains the pout). She drew the letters by herself (C, j, L and O) and I helped her trace her hand.
Today K chose letter "K" to spread Play Doh in the same shape...she didn't want her pic taken again, obviously!
For D, he's memorizing Ps 119:105 "Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." He did a great job writing the verse Wednesday.
He's also continuing to learn about various men in history who were telling others about God's Word & His great love for them. We learned about Patrick, Boniface & Charles the Great. To go along with Boniface's story, D's science activity that day was about trees - roots, trunk, branches, leaves, etc. He was to act out being a tree and K joined in with him.
First they were seeds then they sprouted and the trunk began to grow. K's still a "seed" in the picture while D is a baby tree without any branches yet - he wasn't in a bad mood like his face looks. :o)
Then he grew some more...and K's trying to catch up to him.
To go along with his Charles the Great story today, D was to make a picture with "rich boys" on the left and "poor boys" on the right to show that the boys Charles was teaching had a lot of things, but didn't learn - didn't use their eyes, ears, hands and mouths for learning (doing right). But the "poor boys" were good students who learned. He drew a marble set, money and lots of legos for the "rich boys" on the left side of the paper. Then on the right side he drew the Bible (center), ear for listening (left of the Bible), an eye for watching/paying attention (right of the Bible), music notes for praising God (above Bible), hands to work hard (to top right of Bible - looks like chicken feet), and a mouth for giving compliments out to others (below Bible). After we were done, he added the "WE" in the center all on his own doing - since he's neither rich or poor, but does have good toys yet he told me he uses his eyes, ears, mouths, hands & learns the Bible. I thought that was interesting he put it right in the middle. ;O)
D completed these projects for Math today. I had bought a small box of "dazzled" Sweetheart candies last night. They first had to estimate how many were in the box (their guess - 100). They then sorted each color and counted how many were in each color and wrote it down on a chart. D used the calculator to figure the total hearts in the box = 133. He then subtracted 100 to see that he and K's estimate was only 33 off! Not bad! They transferred the number of hearts into a graph (we used every heart to equal 3 small hearts - not the best idea since it's a little above D's level but I bought a box of hearts too big!). They still had fun regardless of the graph and enjoyed picking out 10 hearts to eat at the end of the activity. The rest of the hearts are packed away for tomorrow's math. :o)
