busy week

You can tell when we're really busy (more busy than usual) week because I don't have time to blog and/or take & post pictures of our events.  Sorry this blog isn't full of pictures - hopefully I'll do a better job of taking some next week!

We completed Unit 22 this week in between family visiting (Mon&Tues), dentist appts (Wed), doctor appt (C - ear infection Weds), C being very needy (a.k.a. held all day - Thurs), my reading class ending (Thurs) and laundry & packing to head out of town tonight.  Whew!  Thank goodness for HOD being "open & go" curriculum and having a few freezer meals left this week!!!

K learned about Jesus choosing his 12 disciples today.  I had her cut out small stick figures of each disciple and glue them onto a grass/sky scene.  She also added the sun & clouds.  It was a non-HOD guide activity but I know how she likes to use scissors and she begged for us to count the disciples.  She showed me she can count to 12!   :o)

K knows letter "R" and gets the sound right each time - yeah!  She especially liked the rhyme this week since it was set to the tune of "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush."  She also joined in on D's rhyme this week since his was set to the tune of "If You're Happy & You Know It."

D's learning about the Reformation in Europe.  We read about Martin Luther and John Calvin and D found Europe and individual countries on the globe. There were a few activities we didn't do because of time or C needing my attention.

For math, instead of drilling all the fact families as we had been doing since he was introduced to all the fact families in the fall, I began with the +0s & +1s flash cards (which we should have done from the beginning, but I didn't since he knows random facts +0 to +9).  Anyway, a few days ago we added +2 facts until he knew them as well as the +0s & +1s facts (which he demonstrated he knew well today).  Now we're ready to add +3s into the mix on Monday and keep going until he's got them memorized.  This is frustrating for both of us because he knows HOW to add with objects & in his head, it's just the sheer memorization he doesn't have yet.  He really wants to be back in the pages of his math book...

For D's reading, he read through Buffalo Bill & The Pony Express this week.  He really enjoyed the book - it is a boy story about Indians, horses, robbers, wolves, etc...and did a great job reading it, too.  He's earned his February Book-It Certificate.  This afternoon he also read two very easy reader books on his own  - he wants to "earn" a Lego set I mentioned awhile ago.  It was for reading books on his own, outside of school time.
