Friday Guests & Smells

I love Fridays! I can't believe this is the end of our fourth week since we began school!

K's Bible story today was from Genesis, where Abraham welcomed & served 3 guests that came to tell him that he and Sarah would have a son (Isaac). K had to act out serving the 3 guests. I sent her off into the playroom to find 3 "guests" and she brought back 3 baby dolls. D helped find the blanket, 3 plates, cups, platter and serving utensils. K knelt down and served each baby, then she decided to help feed this baby with a fork (ouch!). Don't you just love the baby bottle on the plate?! Obviously Abraham served 3 men, not babies, but the focus was on "serving" and we talked about it briefly while K acted out serving her babies.

D told me later in the day that he would serve his friends tomorrow at his birthday party and let them choose which Lego racer they would like to use while he waits and then he will take whatever racer is left. :o)

K had to mark all the "c's" on the page and she chose to use a pink marker (her color of choice right now). She did a great job finding them and she was able to name "C" today when she saw the flashcard. Hooray!

At the bottom of the page she had to connect the big "C" with the little "c" by tracing the straight line which she did really well and so I just had to take a picture to share with you.
Her last activity for the day was drawing 5 tents (1 in each rectangle) on her "Count on Me" page. I helped her with the first two and then she did the rest. She completes one of these pages for each unit to practice counting to 5. She counted 1-5 while I wrote the numbers.

D opted to begin his school day with the science activity for today. He was so excited when I brought down a mini muffin pan with cotton balls and various jars/containers from the kitchen.

He had to pick up one cotton ball at a time, smell it and then guess what container it went with...below he's smelling lemon juice and said it smelled good!
K smelling the lemon juice - she sat in her chair next to D and waited patiently for her turn.

Wow! 6 scents identified (hot sauce, cinnamon, lemon juice, chili powder, cocoa, onion), only 2 to go (almond & vanilla). When we were done smelling the scents, D begged for more! If only he'd do this with trying new foods?! :oP

The "smelling" activity tied in with his Bible story today - Isaac's sons Jacob & Esau - where Jacob makes food for Esau and Esau trades his birthright for the good smelling/tasting food.

After reading another chapter of Reddy Fox today, D had to copy what I wrote and also finish the sentence. He did a nice job writing the two sentences at the bottom of the page...

He wanted to do math upstairs today so he could watch the Lesson 4 on DVD on the "big screen". K watched with him and desperately wanted to play with the blocks, but I tried to get her interested in something else so D could work alone.

He was so excited to finally get to ADDITION problems that when he completed the first page, he turned to the next page and immediately began working on it. I'm not going to say "no" if he wants to do extra math! ;o) His favorite part of the pages were at the bottom of each one where there were two story problems he had to figure out. He did really well on everything (it was just adding zero). He even knows what the commutative property is now.

One of the story problems was like this "Joey had no pets at home, then he was given 8 goldfish. How many pets does he have now?" It stumped D for a second until he realized the first number in the problem would be zero, then he wrote "0+8=8" and grinned at me. I'm so glad he's loving math!

He read through Lesson 90 today in 100 Easy Lessons and finished the story about an ant building a barn to live in (goofy, I know!). The directions in the book like the readers to read through the story twice, but D usually begs me not to have him read it twice. I usually tell him if he reads it well the first time and can answer all the comprehension questions correctly, then he doesn't have to read it again. I'm thankful for his comprehension!
