Wednesday & Thursday

Wednesday is the busiest week day right now for me and there wasn't time to blog yesterday so I'll catch up today... I'm trying to post the highlights of the days rather than bore you with reading about everything we do, but know that we do complete everything in the guide for each school day. :o)

Yesterday, K had letter "D" taped to the floor - she was excited. She was to tiptoe around it... ...and then jump off saying the sound for "D" like "Duh, Duh, Duh!" - I caught this fun picture:

D's Bible story yesterday was about Joseph being in charge of the grain during the 7 good years and 7 bad years and how eventually he saw his brothers (family) again. He had to find 5 toys to be his family...he used Tails (from the Sonic game) along with 4 GeoTrax people (1 woman and 3 men) - guess the actual male/female didn't matter to him!? They were just objects?! Anyway, he had to act out what each one does...He was Tails of course and below he's acting out what D does...play!
We used the same characters for part of the Storytime activity after reading another chapter of Reddy Fox. In the story a character warns his family that Farmer Brown's Boy is coming through the woods with a gun looking for Reddy Fox. Below D is acting out warning the little possum family to stay near their home in the " 'ol hollow tree."
K busy coloring Curious George pink at the table while he was working on something else. Yesterday & today K has wanted to be right with D and I while he's doing his work. I let her sit with me or sit with us at the table as long as she is quiet (which doesn't last too long).

K's Bible story today was about Jacob's Dream (angles ascending & descending a ladder from heaven) and about Jacob meeting Rachel. For her "Count on Me" page, she had to draw a ladder in each box. I walked her through the first one, but she drew it all by herself and then completed 4 more. D wanted to do it with her, so I let him write the numbers 1-5 for her as K counted the ladders. I love seeing them help each other and work together.

She also completed her "Hide & Seek D" page today. She did this all by herself and again picked a pink marker to use to find the D's and then trace the straight lines. The page shows the beginning of her rhyme for Unit 4 that we've been doing this week.

The other verses are similar but changing the people to Jacob & Rachel and Jacob & Esau.

For K's math activity today, she had to stand on a line and jump towards "Rachel" (she picked Belle from her little princess dolls to be "Rachel"). Each time she jumped from the line towards the doll, I marked her landing spot with a piece of tape and her initial. D quickly got in on the jumping, too. After 3-4 jumps each, I asked who was the closest to "Rachel" so D pointed to his piece of tape that was to closest and K pointed to her piece of tape that was the closest. I then asked them about the farthest jump and they pointed each one out.

First jump...
Another jump...
Almost done jumping...

D's Bible story today was about Moses' birth - when his mother places him in the basket in the river since Pharaoh is ordering all boy babies to be killed. The princess finds him and then Moses' sister Miriam goes and finds her mother to care for Moses. I love this story! It's awesome to see how God protects Moses even as baby and it also shows God's concern for a mother's heart by allowing Moses' real mother to care for him. D said it would be sad to put C in a basket and send her away from our home...can't imagine what Moses' mother went through...it was either immediate death for Moses or placing him in the basket and trusting God would protect his life. What faith!

D's activity that went along with the Bible story was to take a baby doll in a basket and "hide" it in the "river" which was our upstairs. Then the other person (a.k.a. princess) went to find the basket and would pick up the baby and say "I will keep him." D hid the basket first and then K looked for the baby. We did it three more times and I'm sure the kids would have kept doing it, but I said we had to get on with D's other work. They love anything related to hide & seek! ;o)

D's Bible verse this week is Provers 3:5-6 which is rather long (compared to the last 3 verses he did since we began school) but he's learning it...and it goes with our Bible stories of trusting God this week!

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him
and he will make your paths straight"

It helps that I write it and post it on our bulletin board downstairs - this week I even drew a few pictures besides the words including a "straight path." D can read all of the words now...including "acknowledge" and "understanding" so it's also great for building his reading vocabulary!

Today he threw a scarf into the air and had to say as much of the verse as he could before the scarf hit the floor. We ended up saying the verse in four sections - one section for each throw and took turns. It made it fun and he can say almost all the verse from memory now. Even K was saying the verse back to me and she had just heard it over and over while she was playing!

D finished the last page for Chapter 4 today in math. I made him do all 6 pages of this chapter just so he had extra practice writing his numbers since he didn't have any trouble with adding zero. His numbers are getting neater and smaller which is nice to see! He will take his Chapter 4 test tomorrow and then begin Chapter 5 on Monday. He also completed Lesson 94 in 100 Easy Lessons and is ready to be finished with the book. He's anxious to see what Phonics Pathways looks like inside and ready to read real books. I finally requested a few from the list suggested at the back of his 100 Easy Lessons book. They are books he'll be able to read right away with learning just a few new words prior to reading it. I'm excited for him!

We finished the day doing his rhyme today and even though it has lots of action it is his least favorite thing to do during the school day. It's growing on him a little, I think! :o).
