When we were finally ready to begin our school this morning, D was complaining about doing it in the basement. He really wanted to do it in the back of the van again today. It's nice to know days that are wild & crazy, he won't mind doing school in the van. I'm treasuring this memory now because I have a feeling it won't be that way when he's older. :o)
For K, we read more about Abraham today (where he lets Lot choose the better land) and talked about not being selfish as Lot was when he took the better land for himself. One of her activities was to act out being Abraham. We used her birthday balloons from last week for the "sheep" and she said, "You can choose whatever land you want." to me who was pretending to be Lot. I took 3 "sheep" balloons and walked to the other side of the room and said, "this land is the best!" While K stayed where she was and said something like, "It's okay to give someone else the better thing, God will take care of me." It's so cute to watch and listen to her follow the directions/dialogue from her curriculum guide. I'm hoping these cute little activities help her to remember the lesson.
A few minutes later when we were talking about selfishness, we ended up having a discussion about cake (D included). It was all about letting someone else have the BIGGER piece and you take the smaller piece. We'll see if they understand and choose to be unselfish after dinner tonight?!
K also glued yarn to the letter "C" and she loved choosing the colors to put on. I was thankful for the bag of scraps I had in my yarn tub downstairs from crochet projects. :o) She is having trouble remembering "C's" name...so we worked on it a little longer today. We also reviewed A & B which she knew right away. I'm proud of her! Her rhyme this week is cute - Clippety, Clippety.
D especially likes his curriculum guide because every day has 9 boxes to complete - each one lists one subject & the activities for that day. He loves to pick & choose what order he completes them. I was going to have him wait to do one box tomorrow but he said, "No, Mommy. I want to do all the boxes today!"
For handwriting today I scrapped the lined paper and allowed him to use his lined marker board (a Walmart find awhile ago). He loves it, but has a bit of trouble being a lefty as his letters can get smudged when he rests his hand on the board. I had him copy September & Tuesday from the calendar, so he could do it on his own (since I was running off to change C's diaper) with the guide for where to start his letters on the table in front of him.
He did a nice job...when I checked on him at one point he had made the lowercase p & t too tiny, so we reviewed where to begin/end the letters, then he did it on his own perfectly!
We also had to read from his devotional book today - all about knowing God is alive without physically seeing Him. The book related it to knowing about the wind...we can't see it but we know it's there. We talked about God's creation allows us to know there is a God. At the end of the reading, D had been thinking about everything we read and said, "Even C can know about God because she has days/nights. It's not always nighttime for her." I love hearing him voice the thoughts in his head.
We also talked about his memory verse while he threw beanbags into the crate and then erased words from his verse on the wall marker board as he memorized it. Proverbs 20:11 "Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure & right." We talked about how his actions tell others about him...if he's always disobeying, name-calling, disrespectful, rude then he'll be known as that, but if he's kind, obeying, respectful - all conduct that is right then others will associate that with him. He told me that he tries to be good, but sometimes isn't but that it's okay. He knows when he should be better.
For Math, he completed the last page for chapter 3. He peeked ahead at chapter 4's work and can't wait to start it. He'll take his chapter 3 test tomorrow and then we'll begin Chapter 4 on Thursday.
In Phonics, he read very well and surprisingly fast and even surprised himself by how quickly he was flying across the lines. He's reading more fluently and I promise one of these days I'm going to persuade him to let me get a video of it!
